Why transformation sucks, but doesn’t suck at the same time

I remember starting my 200 hour yoga training with an impressive amount of non-existing upper arm strength. Did I mention the 200 hours were spread out over just 4 weeks?

Imagine the amount of overstretching and pressure my biceps were under this month. There was this one moment during ‘posture study’ where I collapsed on the floor and yelled out ‘fuck!’. It felt as if I had overstretched myself and could not possibly move forward again.

This mixture of emotion, physical pain and exhaustion is a cocktail we are all familiar with when we find ourselves in the midst of transformation.

So let’s talk about transformation and it’s dualistic nature. Because the painful side we all fear and resent is the same fertile ground constructive qualities grow from. And whether we aspire to become a beautiful phoenix or not… sometimes life forces us to rise from the ashes.

The comfort equation

The uncomfortable is one of the vital components of the equation that brings forth creative solutions, divine downloads and ‘ah-hah’ moments.

The uncomfortable feels like that bright light that shines right into our eyes after being asleep, making us see more clearly, even though it still hurts.

The uncomfortable is the driving factor that forces us think about the opportunities we are not noticing, or even more accurate, we are not not willing to consider, because they don’t match our expectations of how we want growth to evolve.

Sometimes we need to let ourselves be guided outside of the comfort zone. Even if that ‘undesirable detour’ doesn’t match our expectations and doesn’t seem to contribute to where we want to go. Who knows who we are meant to meet along the way? Who knows what we will learn when we surrender into the uncomfortable and the trust that it will serve us?

Be smarter than your own conditioning

To support ourselves while burning down to fertile ashes during transformation, we need to be aware of our mind and beliefs because they are designed to keep us save in the familiar territory (even if that is not making us happy!). They will steer our brain to pick up evidence that support their stories, marketing the comfort of staying where we are.

Why? Because knowing every detail of the familiar, will increase chances of survival. And to the brain, your survival is often more important than your happiness.

Staying in the comfortzone out of fear can become very uncomfortable too though. It takes a toll long-term and we know it. But again, the brain prefers short-term survival strategies.

So when the heat rises and the flames of transformation lick your toes, pay attention to your mindset and beliefs:

Are they helpful or harmful?

Let’s pay more attention to celebrating our efforts and evolution, rather than dwelling on failures and the limitations we see. Gift yourself some guidance when this is a new pattern for you.

Be proud of taking inspired action. Acknowledge yourself for showing up and choosing to soften and trust. Love yourself for your ability to transform. Love the uncomfortable as a catalyst.

That’s what I did after I peeled myself off my yogamat and I don’t regret it.

You’ve got this.

Celebrating my existing upper arm strenght 😉
